Wig Care & Maintenance Guide
Proper care is essential to extend the life of your wig and keep it looking natural, soft, and beautiful. Please follow these guidelines to ensure your wig stays in excellent condition.
1. Washing & Conditioning
How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?
We recommend washing your wig after 6 to 8 wears, or approximately every 10 to 15 days of regular use. At minimum, wash it at least once a month. If you live in a hot, humid climate, sweat heavily, or are exposed to dusty environments, you may need to wash more frequently. Avoid over-washing, as it can dry out the hair fibers and reduce shine.
Washing Steps
Preparation: Before washing, gently detangle your wig using a wide-tooth comb. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This prevents tangles from worsening during washing.
Water Temperature: Always use cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can damage the fibers, cause curling, and ruin the wig's texture.
Shampoo: Use only wig-specific shampoo. Regular shampoos contain harsh chemicals that can strip moisture and damage the hair. Dilute the shampoo in water and submerge the wig, gently pressing rather than rubbing or scrubbing.
Conditioning: Conditioning is essential after every wash. Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends only — avoid the roots and lace area, as this can affect adhesion or cause shedding. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For human hair wigs, consider a deep conditioning treatment (such as coconut or argan oil) once a month; leave the treatment on for about 20 minutes for deeper nourishment.
2. Drying & Styling
Drying Method
After washing, gently pat the wig dry with a soft towel — do not wring or twist it, as this can damage the fibers and cause tangling. Place the wig on a wig stand or mannequin head and allow it to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Avoid using a hairdryer whenever possible. If you must use one, set it to the cool or lowest heat setting and keep it moving at a distance.
Styling & Heat Tools
Only use heat styling tools (curling irons, flat irons, hot rollers) on wigs that are clearly labeled "heat-friendly" or "heat-resistant."
Always apply a heat protectant spray before using any hot tool to minimize damage.
For human hair wigs, moderate heat is acceptable, but keep the temperature below 350°F (175°C) to prevent burning or drying out the hair.
3. Daily Brushing & Detangling
Tools to Use
Always use a wig-specific brush — either a wide-tooth comb, a loop brush, or a metal-tipped paddle brush. Avoid regular plastic combs and brushes, as they can create static electricity or snag and damage the delicate fibers.
Brushing Technique
Always start from the ends and gently work your way up to the roots in small sections.
Hold the hair near the roots with one hand while brushing with the other to reduce tension and prevent shedding.
If you encounter a tangle, do not pull forcefully. Spray a small amount of wig conditioning spray or detangling solution on the tangle and gently tease it apart with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Styling Products
Avoid alcohol-based styling products (e.g., regular hairsprays, gels, or waxes), as alcohol dries out the fibers and causes stiffness.
Use oil-free, wig-specific styling lotions or sprays to add shine, reduce frizz, and prevent static.
Apply a light mist of wig conditioning spray before wearing to keep the hair smooth and manageable throughout the day.
4. Special Care – Lace & Cap Areas
The lace front, lace closure, and wig cap are the most delicate parts of your wig. Please handle them with extra care:
Avoid pulling, tugging, or scratching the lace area during washing, wearing, or removal. Vigorous rubbing can tear the lace and cause hair loss at the hairline.
When washing, gently squeeze the cap area instead of rubbing it.
When applying adhesives or tapes, use only products specifically designed for wigs to avoid damaging the lace or causing skin irritation.
Regularly check the lace and knots for any loosening, and handle the wig gently when removing it to avoid tearing.
5. Storage – How to Store Your Wig
Proper storage is key to maintaining the wig's shape and style.
Always store your wig on a wig stand or mannequin head when not in use. This helps retain its shape and prevents tangling.
Never fold or crush your wig. Folding can create permanent creases and ruin the style.
Store the wig in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and dust.
If you need to store it for a long period, place the wig in its original box or a breathable storage bag, but still keep it on a stand inside if possible.
For curly wigs, avoid combing them before storage—simply fluff them gently and place them on a stand to preserve the curl pattern.
6. Additional Tips
Perspiration and oils from your skin can build up on the wig cap. Consider wearing a wig cap liner underneath to protect the wig and extend its life.
Do not sleep or shower while wearing your wig, as this causes severe tangling, matting, and damage.
If your wig becomes frizzy or dry, apply a small amount of wig-specific serum or oil (for human hair) to restore smoothness.
For wigs with curly or wavy textures, avoid over-brushing; use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb only when necessary to maintain the pattern.
